In a significant move to fortify Uttar Pradesh’s defenses against cyber threats, Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath inaugurated 57 new cyber police stations in a ceremony held in Lucknow. This strategic initiative forms a crucial component of the state’s comprehensive strategy to tackle the escalating challenge of cybercrime and enhance cybersecurity measures.

The decision to establish 57 cybercrime police stations was sanctioned by the Uttar Pradesh Cabinet in December 2023 under Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath’s leadership. This initiative aims to extend specialized cybercrime investigation capabilities to all 75 districts of the state, thereby augmenting Uttar Pradesh’s ability to combat online security threats effectively.

Speaking at the launch ceremony, Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath highlighted the significance of this milestone, stating that Uttar Pradesh Police would be the first in India to establish cyber police stations in every district. He emphasized that victims of cybercrime would no longer need to visit dedicated cyber police stations, as their issues would be addressed at the local police station level, ensuring swift resolution. The establishment of these police stations aims to serve the common people of the state efficiently.

Key districts such as Ghaziabad, Raebareli, Sitapur, and Kanpur Dehat have been identified as locations for the new cyber police stations, ensuring optimal coverage across Uttar Pradesh’s varied geographic regions. The state government has allocated over Rs 127.24 crore to finance this initiative, demonstrating its commitment to constructing a robust cybersecurity infrastructure. This funding will facilitate the development of the police stations and equip them with cutting-edge technology and skilled personnel to counteract modern cyber threats effectively.

In a bid to streamline operations and enhance efficiency, the cybercrime police stations will operate under the supervision of District Superintendents of Police (SPs) instead of Inspectors General (IGs). This organizational change is aimed at improving decision-making processes at the local level, enabling law enforcement to adapt their strategies to the unique cybercrime patterns prevalent in their respective areas.

Prashant Kumar, Director General of Police (DGP), Uttar Pradesh Police, highlighted the importance of this move in capacity building and monitoring the rising cases of cybercrime. He emphasized that each of the 1,526 police stations in Uttar Pradesh would also have a cybercrime help desk or cyber cell staffed with dedicated personnel to handle technical cases effectively.

Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath also announced other initiatives aimed at enhancing the capabilities of the Uttar Pradesh Police, including infrastructure development, capacity building through recruitment and training of officers, and strengthening of the Provincial Armed Constabulary (PAC) and the creation of a special security force.

The establishment of these 57 new cyber police stations marks a significant leap forward in Uttar Pradesh’s efforts to prevent cybercrime, complementing the existing network of 18 district cybercrime police stations. This expanded network underscores the state’s proactive approach to combat cyber threats and safeguard its citizens in an increasingly digital world.
