The biting cold conditions in Dharamsala could play spoilsport during the fifth Test between India and England

The Dharamsala weather will undoubtedly be the point of focus as India and England clash in the fifth and final Test of the ongoing series at the picturesque HPCA Stadium from Thursday.

Having made a remarkable turnaround following the defeat in Hyderabad in the opening match, India secured comprehensive wins in Visakhapatnam, Rajkot, and Ranchi to secure an unassailable 3-1 lead in the series. Rohit Sharma’s men grabbed vital points in terms of the ICC World Test Championship 2023-25 standings, moving to second after the conclusion of the fourth Test. India moved further up to the first spot following New Zealand’s defeat to Australia in Wellington on Sunday.

With the points percentage (PCT) being of importance, India will aim to grab another 12 points with a win in Dharamsala before resuming their campaign later in September. However, with persistent rain, snowfall, and dipping temperatures hitting the high-altitude Himachal town, India’s hopes of a positive result will depend on the skies.

According to the Indian Meteorological Deparment’s (IMD) local weather forecast, the temperatures could dip to as low as 6 degrees Celsius on the opening day of the Test match with light rain predicted for the first two days. Meanwhile, Accuweather.com suggests that afternoon thundershowers could mar the first day with an 82 percent chance of rain. It is also reported that chances of incoming of sleet could play spoilsport during the match.

While the temperature may increase slightly over days two, three and four with regular sunshine, rain could return on the potential fifth day (March 11, Monday) on a day set to be considerably cloudy.

Earlier in January, the Indian team struggled to field during a T20I match against Afghanistan in Mohali, with skipper Rohit Sharma also spotted using a hot-water bag on his palms during a drinks break while fielding.

Gavaskar sounds warning for India

Meanwhile, batting legend Sunil Gavaskar has cautioned the hosts against complacency in conditions that seem more English up in Himachal Pradesh.

“With just one Test match left in the series and that too in weather conditions more English than Indian, the visitors should feel a lot at home. The ball should swing a lot more in the air, but whether it will also seam off the pitch remains to be seen,” Gavaskar wrote in his column for MidDay.

“There’s a school of thought that thinks that with the series decided, the Indians may ease up a bit, but they forget that even a dead rubber match carries points for winning and all those matter when it comes to qualifying for the World Test Championship final,” he added.

India leads the WTC points table with a 64.58 PCT after five wins in eight matches. Meanwhile, England are languishing in eighth spot after nine matches.

Squads for India vs England fifth Test

India squad for 5th Test: Rohit Sharma (C), Jasprit Bumrah (VC), Yashasvi Jaiswal, Shubman Gill, Rajat Patidar, Sarfaraz Khan, Dhruv Jurel (WK), KS Bharat (WK), Devdutt Padikkal, R Ashwin, Ravindra JadejaAxar Patel, Kuldeep Yadav, Mohd. Siraj, Mukesh Kumar, Akash Deep.

A groundbreaking chapter in space exploration unfolds as a team of four astronauts commences their journey to the International Space Station (ISS). Led by Nasa’s Matthew Dominick, alongside Michael Barratt, Jeanette Epps, and Russia’s Alexander Grebenkin, this diverse crew embarks on a six-month mission brimming with anticipation and scientific endeavors.

Scheduled to dock at the ISS on Tuesday, this new crew marks the transition from the previous expedition, comprising members from the US, Denmark, Japan, and Russia, who have diligently occupied the space station since August.

The commencement of their mission coincided with the successful joint launch of Crew-8 by SpaceX and Nasa on March 3, lifting off from the Nasa Kennedy Space Center in Florida. Throughout their half-year tenure aboard the ISS, the crew will witness the arrival of two significant rocketships commissioned by Nasa.

First in line is Boeing’s Starliner capsule, slated to arrive in late April with test pilots onboard. Following closely is Sierra Space’s Dream Chaser, an innovative mini shuttle set to deliver cargo in the subsequent months, albeit without passengers.

Matthew Dominick, a distinguished navy pilot turned astronaut, assumes the role of commander for Crew-8, marking his inaugural journey into space after his selection by Nasa in 2017. Hailing from Wheat Ridge, Colorado, Dominick brings a wealth of expertise, holding a bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering and a master’s in systems engineering.

Joining Dominick is Michael Barratt, Crew-8’s pilot, making his third voyage to the ISS. With prior experience as a flight engineer for Expeditions 19/20, Barratt, who is set to turn 65 in April, will become the oldest full-time astronaut to venture into space, underscoring his unwavering commitment to exploration.

Notably, Jeanette Epps, an accomplished engineer and the second Black woman designated for a prolonged mission on the ISS, brings a message of inspiration to aspiring astronauts worldwide. Originally slated for Boeing’s Starliner, Epps’ transition to SpaceX highlights the adaptability and resilience inherent in space exploration. She fervently advocates for inclusivity, serving as a beacon of hope for aspiring Black girls who dare to dream of reaching for the stars.

Rounding out the team is Roscosmos cosmonaut Alexander Grebenkin, embarking on his maiden voyage to space. Armed with a background in engineering from Irkutsk High Military Aviation School, Grebenkin embodies the spirit of international collaboration as he contributes to the collective pursuit of scientific discovery.

As the new crew acclimatizes to their celestial abode, they bear the responsibility of overseeing the influx of new rocketships and spearheading a myriad of scientific experiments during their transformative tenure aboard the ISS. Embarking on this odyssey, they embody the epitome of human ingenuity, pushing the boundaries of exploration beyond the confines of Earth.
